Tasting Notes

Bleasdale Langhorne Crossing Red

REGION: Langhorne Creek, South Australia
DESCRIPTION: A smooth easy drinking red with vibrant red berry aromas that complement the spicy notes that are apparent on the palate.  The wine is complex with an elegant toastiness that integrates well with the juicy forest fruit characters.  Best drunk within 2 - 3 years.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS:  We have enjoyed this with pizza, pastas, and burgers from the Barby.

Bleasdale Langhorne Crossing White

REGION: Langhorne Creek, South Australia
DESCRIPTION: A crisp, fresh dry white wine displaying attractive fruit salad aromas and tropical fruit flavours.  Best drunk young while the lively citrus and tropical fruit prevail. Will develop more complex flavour with some bottle maturation.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve with simple fish dishes or as an afternoon quaffer.

Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon

REGION: Langhorne Creek, South Australia
DESCRIPTION: (From Sean Wood, Halifax Chronicle-Herald) For such a young cab, it is surprisingly approachable, with a sweet, softly perfumed, spicy vanillin and ripe fruit bouquet. The richness barely avoids being cloying. Flavours too, are unctuously rich. It reminds me of Madeira cake. The texture is velvety, with soft tannins and a raisiny overlay. The finish is long and moderately complex, with a hint of Australian mintiness. Wine Spectator (31 December 2007 - 15 January 2008) rated this wine 87/100.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: This wine cries out for roast beef (Beef Filet) or lamb (Braised Lamb Shanks with Vegetables).

Bleasdale Bremerview Shiraz

REGION:  South Australia
DESCRIPTION: Lovely nose - imagine smoked Spanish pepper mixed with dried chilies, violets and other blue flowers and you've got it!  Soft and velvety smooth, it can be enjoyed as a young wine while the attractive fruit flavours abound, or in the medium term as a 4 to 6 year matured wine. Winestate (Best Wines of 2007) rated this wine 4 ½ stars  Wine Spectator (31 December 2007 - 15 January 2008) rated this wine 85/100.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS:  The classic pairing for this sort of Shiraz is roast beef.

Bleasdale Frank Potts

REGION:  South Australia
DESCRIPTION: A blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with parcels of Malbec and Petit Verdot delivers a wine of great complexity and balance. The Malbec brings spiciness and roundness to the palate and a perfume to the nose and the Petit Verdot adds further complexity to the blend by strengthening and improving the tannin structure of the wine and adding dark cherry and plum fruit characters. This wine can be enjoyed now but will also reward  careful cellaring for up to 10 years. Decant before servingWinestate (Best Wines of 2007) rated this wine 4 stars   Wine Spectator (31 December 2007 - 15 January 2008) rated this wine 86/100.  The WBM100 (June 2008) gives it 92/100/
SERVING SUGGESTIONS:  Roast lamb or game would be the traditional pairings with this wine.

Bleasdale Generations Shiraz

REGION:  South Australia
DESCRIPTION: The icon wine of Bleasdale, perfectly embodies the personality and style of both family and region. 1997 saw the introduction of the Generations when an exceptional parcel of Shiraz grapes was sourced from 85 year-old vines growing on the floodplain. This fruit produces a complex, long-living wine to savour. Earthy, peppery fragrances are followed by a smooth integration of the oak/fruit flavours.  Winestate (Best Wines of 2007) rated this wine 4 stars
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Try this with the biggest, best roast of beef you can find.

Bleasdale Sparkling Shiraz

REGION:  South Australia
DESCRIPTION:   Premium Langhorne Creek Shiraz grapes were selected and blended to produce this richly flavoured wine.  Sweet berry fruit flavours and traditional sparkling wine making methods have combined to produce a wine of great colour and depth of flavour.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: To be enjoyed with Christmas pudding, duck dishes, roast meats, or simply by itself.  Serve chilled at 8° - 10°C.

Bleasdale Malbec

REGION: South Australia
DESCRIPTION: Malbec is rarely seen in Australia as a varietal wine instead usually being used as a blender adding softness and depth to other varieties. In Langhorne Creek however, Malbec performs well by itself and this is an excellent example of what the variety can produce. In its early years the vibrant primary fruit flavours of plums, red berries and spices make the wine delightful drinking. Velvety smooth tannins also ensure a soft, lush finish making for ideal early consumption.
QUAFF… Peter Forrestal (Friday, May 8 2009) said “After nine years of the annual guide, there are only twelve said wines left as the Reliables-they’ve made it to each edition of the book. Judging on the quality of this vintage, the Bleasdale Malbec will be the first of the Reliables to be rated in each of the ten editions of Quaff. . . .  I must say I love the wine and each member of my tasting panel did too – it received a gold, two silver medals and a bronze – an impressive tally considering its price. It is a big, robust red, muscular, oaky and with heaps of tannin, so not everyone will love it. There’s no pretence at finesse or elegance. However I love its full – throttle flavour, power and concentrated blackberry jube, bramble, vanilla bean flavours, its succulence and vibrance. I think it has the fruit weight to balance its oak and tannins and give it approachability. It’s well priced too”

SERVING SUGGESTIONS: We like this wine with tomato-sauced pastas.

Bleasdale Verdelho

REGION: South Australia
DESCRIPTION: Verdelho is fast emerging as an excellent variety for producing fresh, floral, drink now wines. This wine is a great example. Fermented to dryness and bottled while young with Stelvin closures to capture the freshness of this herbaceous wine. This is a zingy wine with pretty pear and green apple flavours that linger nicely on the refreshing finish. Rated 87/100 by Wine Spectator (April 30, 2008). Ideal to enjoy in its youth.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: This is a wine that pairs well with a wide variety of dishes such as Asian-influenced foods, seafood, chicken, veal and pork.

Sandalford Element Classic White

REGION: Swan River Valley and Greater Perth regions, Western Australia
DESCRIPTION: 42% Verdelho, 31% Chenin Blanc, 26% Semillon 1% Chardonnay  made from three varieties eminently suited to the warmer climates, which prevail in both the Swan Valley and Greater Perth regions. However, given this warmer climate, all these varieties have been picked a little "greener" than they normally would. This strategy gives a grassier and more herbaceous edge to the wine with a somewhat fresher and crisper mouth feel, than would exist had the fruit been left to ripen to full maturity. The nose is brimming with cut grass, fresh honeydew melon and a hint of tropical guava. This all translates to the palate with the added zest provided by the natural acid backbone of the fruit. Certainly this is a drink now wine.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: The wine should be served well chilled. Classic White is a great drink just on its own or accompanied with the freshest of foods, particularly seafood.

Sandalford Element Shiraz-Cabernet

REGION:Western Australia
DESCRIPTION: 69% Shiraz, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cab Franc, 6% Merlot.  This is the classic Australian blend of ripe, sweet and juicy dark berry flavours with hints of Shiraz spiciness and Cabernet eucalypt. The vanillin oak characters mingle enticingly through the blend with the texture of the wine weighted by soft and furry tannins. Although drinking superbly now, this will mature and age for at least another five years.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS:  Serve with chops, steaks and sausages.

Sandalford Margaret River Reserve Shiraz

CSPC 454850
REGION: Western Australia
DESCRIPTION: Mid-dark cherry red with classic Shiraz nose of lifted clove, nutmeg, pepper and spice. On the palate, sweet spice flavours lead to moderate tannins and nuanced oak on the finish.  This is a stylish, classy wine that earned an 87 from James Halliday. Winestate (Best Wines of 2007) rated this wine 4 stars.  Australian Doctor (January 30, 2009) says: "Margaret River is a cabernet country but produces topnotch shiraz, too. This has scored gold in wine shows
over in the west and deservedly so, given its ripe full flavours, great
balance and winemaker Paul Boulden’s deft use of oak."
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Roast beef or thick grilled steaks will go well here and it is a natural with lamb chops.

Sandalford Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

CSPC 103846
REGION: Western Australia
DESCRIPTION: This wine has all of the intensity, structure and varietal flavour that is expected of a Margaret River Cabernet.  Very good colour with fine structure and texture, a classic Cabernet nose of faint cedar and blackcurrant. The fruit is perfectly ripe with blackcurrant, mint, cassis, and cedary oak characters.  The balance between fruit and oak is close to perfect and the palate is focused and controlled.  It has a supple, smooth texture and the pleasantly firm tannins suggest a few years cellaring.  James Halliday in winecompanion.com.au (February 2006) rates this wine 94/100.  WBM100 (June 2008) gives it 93/100, calling it "Terrific Cabernet".  Decanter (February 2009) makes it a Five Star award winner: ‘Spicy, white- and black-pepper nose. Intense cassis fruit and very concentrated, with spicy complexity and integrated oak. Very long, complex finish. Lovely."

SERVING SUGGESTIONS: A super wine for beef steaks and roasts.

Sandalford Prendiville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

REGION: Western Australia
DESCRIPTION:  On the nose this wine is brimming with super-ripe briary fruit notes and essence of vanilla and cedar from the oak influence. There is also that unmistakable hint of “wet forest floor”, which often defines a Margaret River regional character. The mouthfeel is full-bodied with all that is on the nose flowing through on to the palate. The silky tannins give texture to the wine whilst the oak flavours are in harmony and balanced by the overt fruit nuances. A perennial prize winner, this wine will cellar for up to 25 years.  Wine (December 2008) conducted a taste-off between South African and Australian Cabernet Sauvignons, the best rated Australian (3rd Place) was Prendiville: "The nose shows dark fruit and some mintiness. The palate is filled with super-ripe dark juicy berry flavours and accented by savoury, smoky oak. The mouthfeel is full-bodied all wrapped up in a velvet fist of tannins whilst maintaining perfect balance and softness on the finish. This is a wine drinking wonderfully now but cellaring for up to ten years will only enhance the already formidable aspects of this wine.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS:  Roast beef and steaks or hearty stews would pair well with this wine.

Sandalford Protege Classic White

REGION: Western Australia
DESCRIPTION: The colour is pale lemon with some lime tints. The nose has a lovely grassy character with hints of nettle from the Sauvignon Blanc component and citrus characters from the Semillon. SERVING SUGGESTIONS: We like this wine with burgers and pastas.

Sandalford Sandalera

REGION: South Australia
DESCRIPTION: Sandalera is a dessert fortified wine. Tawny coloured, it has a complex nose rich in malty toffee aromas of great intensity.
