Here's another exceptional wine at a shockingly low price. Look for huge dried peach, cinnamon spice, and gooseberry with a hint of petrol. The palate is medium sweet -- ideal for the style -- with a soft acidity, tangy lemon and apricot flavours. Crisp and clean with very good body and length. The profile is classic, with bang-on typicity. Demands snitzel or roast pork. (

Winestate (March/April 2007) rates Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 at 4 ½ stars: " 'A perfect nose,' declared one judge. Gorgeous violet fruit. Very stylish, long, sweet primary fruit palate with well-chosen oak. Great menthol and cassis flavours. Still has years to go."

Dan Kislenko (The Hamilton Spectator, Feb 17, 2007) reviews Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon 2004: " It's made from select fruit from the winery's other properties along the Margaret River 300 kilometres to the south, and which spent 14 months in barrel. The first impression is chocolate mint, and it's a bold mint at that. Then comes a wave of cracked pepper and cloves. Then the fruit emerges -- plum, cherry, blackberry, all dense and tannic but elegant, finishing with a strong line of licorice and bitter almond. This young wine needs two to three hours to breathe or can age for a couple more years."

Steve Heimoff in Wine Enthusiast (December 1, 2006) rates J. Lohr Los Osos Merlot at 88: "Nice and rich, this is a layered, complex wine with cassis, cherry and coffees that finish very dry, with soft but fine tannins. The wine has obvious refinement and pedigree.  There's a bit of sharpness that should mellow over the next year or two."

The Globe & Mail (Toronto, February 24, 2007) "Wines & Spirits", a weekly column by Beppi Crosariol made Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 his "Pick of the week".  He wrote: "Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 from Western Australia is full-bodied, savoury and Bordeaux-like, brimming with blackcurrant, mint, and cedar, with just the right amount of lively, clean acidity on the finish."
 

Wines (January/February 2007) reviews Segura Viudas Aria Brut and gives it 3 1/2 stars: "Spain is the source of great tasting and great value sparkling wines. A blend of three traditional grape varieties, Aria is made in the traditional method, with secondary fermentation occurring in the bottle.  This is deliciously complex and crisp. A great aperitif or oyster wine."

Wine Enthusiast (December 15, 2006) gives Cline Five Reds a score of 85: "Cline makes interesting, offbeat red blends, and this composite of Syrah, Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Alicante Bouchet, and Mourvedre comes from vineyards scattered all over California.  It's a hearty, lusty wine, expressive in peppery cherry and mulberry flowers, and nicely dry.  You'll be surprised at how rich it is at this price."

Wine Access Buyer's Guide 2006 rates Segura Viudas Aria Brut 89: "Great value in bracing, refreshing bubbly.  Terrific, lifted, complex toasted almond, lime, chalk and green melon-pear aromas.  Mid-weight, taut and firm with fine acid balance.  Dry, mouth watering finish, with very good to excellent length."

Wine Access (October 2006) scores Painter Bridge Zinfandel 87: "Fruity blackberry, blueberry fruit with mocha oak and peppery, meaty aromas. The entry is soft and round with mostly supple tannins. On the palate, the fruit is a mix of juicy, cedar-y, blackberry, plum with hints of coal and licorice. A better than average, easy-sipping barbecue red at a fair price." 

Wine Enthusiast (September 2006) rates Vionta Albarino 90: "Full and robust in its approach. The bouquet is fragrant and expansive, with melon and honey aromas pouring forth with gusto. the flavors are quite delicious, a near perfect blend of apple, melon and citrus. The word on the street is that . . . Albarinos offer great fruit-to-acid balance. This wine is an example of just that."

Tom Elkjer in "A Virtual Visit - Cline Cellars (winecountry.com) reviewed Cline Ancient Vines Mourvedre ("I love the Cline Mourvedre aromas: blackberry and cherries with some earth below and baking spice above - and it's even better in your mouth.  The grape tannins in these 100-year-old vines are indescribably wonderful: they don't so much balance the fruit sugar as merge with it into something better.  For my money, one of the great California wine programs of any variety or region."); Cline Ancient Vines Carignane ("this is the red-fruit counterpart to the Mourvedre, also from century-old vines.  In your mouth it's juicy and sweet and deceptively complex.  Most Carignane suffers from rough edges, but not this beauty - the tannins and phenolics are etherically bound into the flavors so that the aftertaste goes on and on."); and Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel ("Zin can't get more concentrated and intensely black than this, and I could not spit this wine out during the tasting - it was just too delicious.  Full-bodied, smooth, dark, rich, spicy, earthy, and with a fabulous sweetness in the finish as the grape tannins slide off the tongue and let the fruit shine one last time.  Transcends wine.").

Vintages Essentials (Fall/Winter 2006) notes about Cline California Syrah: :Made with grapes sourced primarily from Cline's Sonoma County vineyards, this well-priced Syrah will have you singing its praises! Look for aromas and flavours of blackberry, plum, cracked pepper, spice, and leather, with a hint of oak and a medium long finish. A natural partner for grilled lamb or wild boar sausages."

Decanter - Italy 2006 cites Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico as one of its "Magnificent Seven" with this comment: "Sweet, smoky aromas give way to sour plums and berry fruits in the mouth, drying on the finish. [Drink] Up to 2010."  The same issue recommends Villa Cafaggio Cortaccio ("Quite rich, plush and plummy, wood smoke. Soft, plump, some juicy but moderate acid, moderate tannins, very good. Drink now."), Villa Cafaggio San Martino ("Shoe polish, leather. Very smooth and silky, sexy wine. Balanced and complete. Mid-weight. Delicious. [Drink] Up to 5 years."), Casa Girelli Canaletto Primitivo ("Good mouthful of flavour, structure, and style. Balanced, warm on the finish. Lovely, fresh. [Drink} Up to 2 years."), and Casa Girelli Canaletto Nero d'Avola Merlot ("Attractive aromas, fresh raspberry fruit, juicy notes. Well-balanced palate, delicate juicy fruit characters. Drinking well now.")

Vintages (June 24, 2006) makes J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the Month" - "Though mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), winemaker Jeff Meier blends in small amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Carignan, Merlot, and more. The final wine overdelivers with ripe black fruit, tobacco, dark chocolate, vanilla and spice characteristics. It's dry and medium full-bodied, soft and deeply flavoured with a long supple finish. Enjoy with barbecued spare ribs or steak."

Decanter (June 2006) recommends Stadt Krems Cremesia Gruner Veltliner: "Crisp, citrus, decent weight, honeyed, pepper and very good length. Drink now."

Vintages (August 19, 2006) reviews Vedrenne Supercassis Creme de Cassis: "For their 'Supercassis'. Vedrenne uses black currants from plantings all around its Burgundy-based distillery.  Perfect for a Kir (Supercassis and white wine) or Kir Royale (Supercassis and Champagne or sparkling wine).

beer.about.com  rates Warsteiner Premium Verum Beer its #1 choice for summer sipping : "For many, Pilsner is the only acceptable summer brew. Warsteiner is an excellent example of a German Pils. It's loaded with Saaz hops and has a wonderful lager snap to it that makes it a great beer for hot summer days."

The Western Australian (July 20, 2006) gives Sandalford Premium Shiraz 91.  "This is pretty awesome example of Margaret River Shiraz.  It has substantial tannins and weight and plenty of oak that's been gobbled up by the super contrasted fruit.  A powerful and imposing wine that will continue to improve with cellaring.  Drink now to 2014."

Wine & Spirits (August 2006) scores 90 points for Aria Brut Nature: "An elegant Cava, this feels rich and composed.  Its simple pearlike fruit integrates with the bubbles and the dosage, providing a clean, complete and satisfying length of flavor.  Easy to enjoy on its own, yet substantial enough for veal sautéed with sage and mushrooms."

Wine Enthusiast (July 2006) rates Corvo Bianco 85: "Corvo's well-known Insolia-Grecanico white blend is rich with peach and floral notes and is totally uncomplicated.  It's clean and refreshing in the mouth, easy to drink but not totally anonymous thanks to its Sicilian core."

Vintages (July 22, 2006) writes about Segura Viudas Vina Heredad Rosado: "In our market, Segura Viudas is best known for their superior sparkling wines.  For some years, however, they have produced a complete line of fine still wines, such as this rose.  A blend of 45% Garnacha, 35% Temperanillo and 20% Careinena, this rose is elegant, soft and very fresh with the bright fruit tones balanced by crisp acidity."

"Summer Sippers" from Wine Access (Summer 2006) include Segura Viudas Lavit Rosado Brut: "Fresh stylish mousse (small bubbles) with an attractive pale strawberry colour.  Look for delicate cherry, baked red apple, mineral and lime rind notes with just a hint of toasted earth.  This is crisp and fresh with more cherry, mineral, citrus and nutty, roaster flavours.  As you would expect, it is a bit fruitier, creamier, and drier than the Brut Reserva.  Serve at most any occasion."

Wine Enthusiast (June 2006) rated Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad 89: "Regal in presentation with its faux-metal label and broad-based bottle. And in every edition it's one of Spain's more elegant, serious Cavas.  Look for slightly toasted, charcoal-based aromas backed by ripe apple and sweet citrus flavors.  Very good feel and length. One of Spain's truly consistent high-end bubblies."

Peter Rockwell in the Halifax Daily News (June 22, 2006) wrote: :"For that so close to champagne taste without the high price tag, you can't beat Bouvet Ladubay Brut -- a voluptuous blend of chenin blanc and chardonnay made in France's Loire Valley using that classic production method they pronounce methode traditionnelle. Rich and well-rounded it offers clean lines and a polished citrus flavour for a third of the price of the big boys."

Peter Rockwell in the Halifax Daily News (June 15, 2006) wrote: "Cellier Yvescourt's 2005 Bordeaux Rose brought back some serious French memories for me with its soft floral aroma and full-bodied expression of cherry, raspberry, grape skin and cleansing mineral-infused fruit flavour."

Rick VanSickle in the Toronto Sun (May 21, 2006) had this to say about Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel: This adds plenty more pepper spice with jammy raspberry and earth notes on the note. It's rich and layered with both dark and red fruits and plenty of tasty spice."

In the Denver Post (May 17, 2006) Cline Ancient Vines Mourvedre was made Wine of the Week: "Some grapes taste like they sound.  Think about it.  Merlot: simple, straightforward; Chardonnay: smooth, rich; Zinfandel: zany, zingy, with Zorro-like flair; Refosco: angular, hard.  And Mourvedre? Brooding, mysterious, dark.  Mourvedre doesn't often come packaged on its own; its dark flavors typically provide the base notes to many red blends from Southern France.  The grape has been planted in California for more than 100 years, thanks to the Spanish settlers, who called it Mataro.  It used to fill jug wines and fell out of favor among producers of fancier wines.  But some of the century-old vines still produce excellent juice - which is why Cline can bottle a dark, brooding, meaty Mourvedre . . . It's not a polite, refined wine, but deliciously animale - a little meaty and a little earthy with a wild minty edge - just the thing for grilled lamb cooked over rosemary, or anything meaty, rare and savored slowly into a dark, warm night."

Vintages (May 13, 2006) reviews Lavit Rosado Brot: "The blend for this rose fizz is 80% Trepat, 10% Monastrell and 10% Garnacha. Trepat is a crisp red grape that is indigenous to the north-east of Spain and is often found in rose wines. The Monastrell and Garnacha bring their fruit forward focus to this fine Spanish bubbly. Enjoy on the patio with veal tenderloin or other roasted red meats."

On redwhiteand rose.com (May 4, 2006), Cline Oakley Five Reds earned this review: "A lovely Rhone style blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Carignane, Grenache, and Mourvedre.  This wine is bursting with flavors of blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and black pepper.  A smooth blend with hints of vanilla and spice.  Soft tannins and a touch of acidity make this a very integrated wine that is smooth and balanced."

Rod Phillips in the Ottawa Citizen (May 24, 2006) reviews Yvon Mau Premius Bordeaux Rouge: “A rich blend from Bordeaux that delivers a good mouthful of red and dark fruit and berry flavours with notes of spice, oak and vanilla. It's well-balanced and makes a good partner to red meat dishes.”

Peter Forrestal in the Sunday Times Magazine (May 14, 2006) rated Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon 17.5/20, making it one of his top 100 wines of the year: "Winemaker Paul Boulden has made a wonderfully fragrant wine from Wilyabrup fruit with blackcurrant, mint and cedary oak characters, supple, smooth texture. Approachable now."

Wine Enthusiast (May 2006) scored Yvon Mau Chateau Preuillac at 90 with the comment:  “The Mau family, who also run négociants Yvon Mau, have poured money into this Médoc chateau, bringing it back to life. It has paid off in this powerful, rich 2003, which packs blackberry flavors alongside new wood, polished tannins and impressive aging potential.”
 

Dan Kislenko in The Hamilton Spectator (May 6, 2006) says of Premius Bordeaux Rouge: "Another excellent value. It's modern Bordeaux, priced competitively and labelled for clarity, yet still showing regional styling.  The most classically structured of the wines, it has a ripe tannic framework and flavours of black currant, black cherry, dried blueberry and angles of cloves, cinnamon, pepper and sweet vanilla."

Mark Oldman in EveryDay with Rachel Ray (April/May 2006) wrote: "Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel 2004. From old vines come potent prodigies like this teeth-staining 15 percent beast, its black berry base showing hints of espresso and cocoa, followed by a long finish."

Gordon Stimmell in Gord on Grapes in the Toronto Star (Apr. 26, 2006) had this to say about the Yvon Mau range of varietals: " . . . Yvon Mau offers terrific, entry-level French wines. Its merlot (rating 87/100) is very French styled, with lots of herbal notes, and its cabernet sauvignon (85) is lightly fruited with red plum and candied cherry accents. But it was the shiraz, with deeper, denser peppery qualities, which led the pack in my tastings from that producer. (From the Aude region of southern France, this is a sturdy, affordable red. Aromas of blueberry, cedar, violets, black cherry and a herbal hint of marjoram are immediately appealing. Flavours show peppery spice, with fullish black cherry and cedar and licorice notes, with a long sustained spicy finish. Food suggestion: Game stews or burgers.)"

Gismondi on Wine  (April 09, 2006) made J. Lohr Painter Bridge Zinfandel  a "Best imports in Canada under $15" with this comment:   "Fruity blackberry, cherry, cola, peppery, cedar bark, meaty aromas. Soft, round, supple style with prune plum, cedar bark, spicy, black berry flavours and a wisp of raisins, cola and licorice. Easy drinking, solid, fruity barbeque wine. Good value and flavours."

Food & Wine (April 2006) writes of Cline 2003 Cool Climate Syrah: "Black raspberry notes mark this taut red from cool Sonoma Coast vineyards."

The Press Democrat (March 22, 2006) gives 2003 Cline California Syrah 3 ½ stars: "Rich, ripe black fruit flavors, with firm tannins. Toasty, with notes of plum, coffee and cloves. A big finish."

Decanter Italy 2006 reviews a number of wines including Villa Cafaggio Cortaccio: "Quite rich, plush and plummy, wood smoke. Soft, plump, some juicy but moderate acid, moderate tannins, very good. Drink now." Casa Girelli Canaletto Primitivo Puglia: "Sweet strawberries. Juicy, soft, easy, very appealing style. Drinking well now."  Casa Girelli Canaletto Nero d' Avola Merlot: "Attractive aromas, fresh raspberry fruit, juicy notes. Well-balanced palate, delicate juicy fruit characters. Drinking well now." Villa Cafaggio San Martino: "Shoe polish, leather. Very smooth and silky, sexy wine. Balanced and complete. Mid weight. Delicious. Up to 5 years." Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico: "Sweet, smoky aromas give way to sour plums and berry fruits in the mouth, drying on the finish. Up to 2010."

Vines (Winter 2006) says this of Yvon Mau Shiraz: If this is the potential of Syrah (Shiraz) from the south of France, why don't we see more rich and concentrated wines like this. Shockingly good for the price, Yvon Mau's Shiraz is peppered with spicy fruit (plums and tart cherry) and soft tannins.  An extremely enjoyable wine . . ."  Its take on J. Lohr Riverstone Estate Chardonnay is: "Hailing from a cooler region of Monterey, this Chardonnay comes across with good finesse and a pleasant spicy intensity. The nose suggests a mix of vanilla and subtle brown spices, while the medium-bodied palate presents a mix of nicely balanced oak and fruit flavours.  The crisp and clean finish imparts a long, lingering aftertaste that entitles you to take another sip. A well-made wine that offers good value for the quality."

Vines (March/April 2006) reviews two California wines : J. Lohr Painter Bridge Zinfandel: "A wine with easy appeal, this solid Zin offers a mix of benchmark berry, cherry and spice aromas. It's got that flat cola nose that is the common denominator of California Zin. The palate is generous and round, with dark fruit flavours layered with cedar, raisin and spice notes. Good value."  Cline Cellars Ancient Vines Zinfandel: "Cline used fruit from its Oakley vineyard as well as vineyards spread across Lodi to create this earthy model of Zinfandel. "Brambly" was used as a description for this wine, suggesting both the leathery, wild berry flavour and the leaf-pile/sweet hay aroma that adds complexity to this robust red. The resulting wine is intensely flavourful and rich."

Beppi Crosariol (The Globe & Mail, March 4, 2006) writes about Sandalford Shiraz: "In a fuller-bodied style, but still quite savoury, is the juicy, ripe, chewy Sandalford Shiraz 2002 from Western Australia.  Flavours of plum and blackberry are layered with sweet vanilla and a hint of mint. Try it with pepper-crusted beef tenderloin or roasted leg of lamb."

Jeremy Oliver, quoted in Vintages (March 18, 2006) says of Sandalford Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon: "A finek\ly balanced Cabernet whose sweet, lifted violet and cassis-like fragrance reveals undertones of regional earthiness as well as carefully measured cedar/vanilla oak.  Supple, fine and seamless, it's long and willowy, with earthy, musky Cabernet flavours carefully knit with cedary oak and silky tannins. Score - 90"  In Vintages (March 4, 2006) Jeremy Oliver is quoted about Sandalford Shiraz: "Spicy, peppery aromas of candied cherries and plums with a sweet background of slightly gluey vanilla oak. Up-front, with sweet bubble gum-like small red and black berry flavours, the palate then dries out with nuances of currents and plums, before finishing drying, fine-grained and oaky."

Vintages (March 4, 2006) reports on Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon: "Good structured Cabernet. Classy with elegant tannins, sweet lactic oak, spices and moderate concentration. Score - **** (out of 5)." 

Wine Enthusiast (February 2006) makes Canaletto Pinot Grigio delle Venezie an 86 point "Best Buy" with the comment: "Big minerality makes for an extremely food-friendly wine with candy-like lemon-lime powder and mouth-puckering tartness."

Decanter (February 2006) reviews Western Australian Cabernet Sauvignons including: Sandalford Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon "Good minty cassis nose. Nice weight here, more fruit. Good Cabernet with some complexity, nice structure." and Sandalford Elements Cabernet Sauvignon: "Charred/burnt oak, complex. Firm, grippy tannins, good fruit complexity, nice length."

Wine & Spirits (February 2006) rates Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon at 90 points: "The fresh red- and black currant flavors keep this wine firm and crisply detailed.  There's a green herb edge to the tannins, giving them a little lift, as parsley would lift the flavor of a steak.)

Wine & Spirits (December 2005) calls Neirano Barbera d'Asti "Good Value": This simple, meaty barbera finishes soft and sweet, a light red for sausages."

Robert Noel (World of Wine, Times & Transcript, December 3, 2005) writes about Cline Red Truck: "A new offering from California. Blend of Syrah and Mourvedre. Scent of red raspberries, cherries with a hint of oak. Loads of solid fruit flavour. Great with wings or pizza."

Wine Enthusiast, Buying Guide (November, 2005) has awarded Cline 2004 Ancient Vines Zinfandel 90 pts, and made it an "Editor's Choice."

In The Kitchen with Narsai (Air date October 27, 2005) reported on Cline Ancient Vines Mourvedre: "A most unusual wine made usually in the Rhone and Southern France, there is a dusty, intriguing bouquet and a chocolate like character on the palate.  It doesn't actually taste like chocolate but it feels like chocolate.  The vines are 80-120 years old, and there is very little Mourvedre grown anymore in California.  It is also known as Mataro.  A very impressive wine, already soft at the edges and therefore drinkable, but will certainly age for a few years."

Wine Enthusiast (November 15, 2005) gives J. Lohr Riverstone Estate Chardonnay 90/100 and makes it a "BEST BUY."  Steve Helmoff writes: "One of the best Chards in this price category, this Monterey example is rich in tropical peach, and spice flavors and crisp in acidity.  It gas smoky oak, buttercream and a bit of lees - in other words, the works."

Leslie Sbrocco, San Francisco Chronicle (Thursday, October 20, 2005) writes: "The 2004 White Truck California White Wine blend, also made by Cline Cellars, is a companion to Cline's popular Red Truck bottling. Made primarily from Sauvignon Blanc complemented by Pinot Grigio, Viognier and Chardonnay, the wine is made without oak barrels so that it retains its fresh, fruity character. Crisp citrus notes are rounded out by a smooth texture. Drink both Cline wines with spicy fare, from red beans and rice to fiery Chinese takeout."

Vines (October 2005) writes about Casa Girelli Canaletto Primitivo:  "The grape Americans call Zinfandel, and the grape Italians call Primitivo, are both Crljenak Kastelenski (pronounced tsuri-YEN-ahk kahstel-AHN-ski), a Croatian grape that's nearly extinct in its homeland. The difference between Casa Girelli's wonderful Primitivo and its American counterparts is that there's no way you'd get this much character from a $13 California Zinfandel. Look for plush berry and spice aromas and black cherry and earthy menthol flavours that are also common to Old Vine Zinfandels from Amador. The structure is on the whole leaner than those Amador monsters, but this is by far a better food wine."

Tom Marquardt and Patrick Darr in The Capital (Annapolis, MD, Sept 14, 2005) have this to say about Cline White Truck 2004: "Leveraging the success of its popular Red Truck red blend launched in 2003, Cline came out with a white version call Red Truck White. But the name didn't make much sense, so the 2004 is White Truck and the head-turning label sports - ta dah - a white truck. No matter, the juice is mighty fine with a truckload of fruit from four grape varieties: sauvignon blanc (55 percent), pinot grigio, viognier and chardonnay. Grapefruit flavors with good citrus notes dominate the wine and the lush fruit give the mouthfeel of an off-dry wine. But it's dry and delicious. Great value."

San Francisco Chronicle. Wine and Food Newsletter (May 19, 2005) has made Cline Cellars Red Truck its WINE OF THE WEEK: "Sonoma Valley's Cline Cellars produces this easy-going Merlot, Syrah and Petite Sirah blend that is brimming with berry and black cherry flavors and a touch of spice. Soft and juicy, it's quite nice for the price."

Cline Cellars Red Truck was reviewed in Weekend Wine (May 3, 2005): "A bit of a departure from the classic Rhone blend, with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah. But the result is slurpably delish - medium-bodied red currant and cherry are smooth and lush, with a zing of black pepper enlivening dark chocolate and anise and light herbal notes. Buy a bunch - it will go fast! Ready to drink now." 

MSNBC Interactive (March 28, 2005) reviewed Cline Cellars 2003 Red Truck: "The 03 from this Sonoma winery contains less exotic grapes than 02, if you can believe it merlot, syrah, Cabernet franc and petite sirah. (The 02 was built around Mourvedre and included such obscurities as alicante bouschet.) It s modest, fruit-focused and meant for a casual meal. Worth keeping a bottle around for burger and pizza nights."

Vintages (April 2005 Releases) quotes a Wine Access review of Stadt Krems Grüner Veltliner Cremisca : "A decent minerally example of Austria's famous white grape.  The nose is a bit shy for now with apple and yellow plum aromas.  It is a crisp light to mid weight version with good balance and a fairly long apple pie finish.  This may well evolve pleasantly over the next two years, would be fine with shellfish now."

Decanter (October 2004) judged "The World's Greatest Wines".  J. Lohr Los Osos Merlot won Bronze: "Sweet oak, black pepper.  Plush tannins, plum, olive, polished.  Medium body, acidity crisp, medium finish."  A Silver Medal went to Gonzalez Byass Noe Pedro Ximanez Sherry: Opaque.  Pedro Ximanez spice and walnuts. Big soft, licorice icing, syrup, toffee, molasses.l Drink now."  Gonzalez Byass Oloroso Matusalem Sherry also won Silver: "Dark brown. Spice, walnut, a hint of straw.  PX. Lovely, spicy, warm, but not cloying. Drink now."

Wine & Spirits (February 2005) rates  Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz 90 with the comment: "The soft perfume of this wine should grow more complex with cellar time, as the harsh grip of the tannins should soften. This is intriguing as a young wine, but still unsettled; Clare in its coolness, this should age well."

Time to set the taste buds ablaze with the sweet deliciousness of ripe raspberries as encapsulated in one of Canada’s finest dessert fruit wines. While the award-winning Southbrook Framboise was the first Canadian wine to grace the shelves of Harrods of London, it is still a bit hard to track down here at home. With 14.5% alcohol, it is actually a fortified wine where the fermenting still sweet raspberry juice is halted by the addition of pure Ontario distilled grape spirit. Look for dense, sweet but balanced, lively, raspberry essence with a lingering finish.  ) has this take on DeBortoli Willowglen Shiraz-Cabernet: "Plum and oak flavours and aromas, from top to bottom.  Good red wine, built for the masses.  Three quarters Shiraz, with Cab making up the remainder."

Vintages (Holiday Gifts 2004) writes of Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Brut: An outstanding Grand Reserve Cava in a beautiful pewter-based bottle, this effervescent wine is one of our picks for a sophisticated soiree.  It is produced from the finest harvests of Macabeo and Paralleda, and shows the perfect balance between youth and age."

Peter Rockwell, writing in HFX (January 13, 2005) reviews Cline Red Truck:  A perfect example of the exciting flavours a little ingenuity in the mixing department can bring to a wine.  This inspired blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, Merlot, and Petit Sirah from various Cline-owned vineyards throughout California may sound like a mongrel, but its broad gestures of jammy raspberry, cranberry, cherry and chocolate make for the answer to a food- and wine-lovers prayer.

Wine Spectator (September 15, 2004) rates Three Thieves Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 87: Ripe and round with very good depth to blackberry, currant and dried wild berry notes. Concentration and intensity linger, with round, firm structure andinviting oak toastiness. Drink now.

Nat Decants Good Value Wines for May 2004 reviews Cline Zinfandel:  The most consistently good zin from California. Great value and taste with ripe berries. A happy summer wine that's not too heavy and extracted. Score 92/100.

Peter Rockwell, writing in HFX (April 22, 2004) reviews Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon: "If you're not sure what wine writers mean by "fruit-forward" you'll understand after a taste of this flavour-infused Aussie Cabernet. Its big, melt-in-your-mouth fruit is saturated with lip-smacking blackberry and sweet plum that's cradled by calming tannins and invigorated by a light snap of licorice spice on the finish.  You'll be drowning in the thick, berry fruit -- but what a way to go."

Billy Munnelly (Billy's Best Bottles 2004) writes: "It would be hard to find a better example of spirited Italian red wine than Citra Montepulciano D'Abbruzzo.  So tasty and so generous. Great with hearty pasta, spicy sausages or even a steak. May be the best red wine value in the world."  Cline Zinfandel, Munnelly says, "is Port-like in richness.  Tons of spicy/sweet flavours.  Very sensual.  Suggests the fireside, Christmas Day and romance.  Your choice."  On sherry, Munnelly writes: "Producer Gonzalez Byass has dumped the traditional black garb and re-outfitted its Tio Pepe Fino in a fresh green package.  Same bone-dry, crisp, refreshing drink but it's amazing how much more appeal it has now. Fino is a high alcohol (about 15%) dry wine so it packs a punch.  A tang.  It's a great hot weather aperitif or partner for shrimps on the BBQ.  A little fino goes a long way so it's quite the bargain.  A refrigerated open bottle keeps well for at least a week."

Decanter (April 2004) reviews Morlanda Vi de Guarda: "Dark, savoury, spicy fruit; big, crisp, tannic structure, fruit, good length."

Anthony Gismondi reviews J. Lohr Riverstone Estate Chardonnay on his web site: "A consistent wine over the years but this is a definite improvement. Ripe apple, pear, honey aromas with some floral, citrus notes. Round, moderately dry with orange citrus, mineral, honey, butterscotch flavours and a bit of citrus rind on the finish. Elegant, fresh and a touch oily. Good value. 88/100."  J. Lohr Painter Bridge Zinfandel Shiraz scores 86/100: "Spicy, minty, cherry jam nose with some volatile notes. Soft, warm and dry with light tannins and some elevated acidity. Cherry, black berry, minty spice flavours and a touch of meaty gaminess. Dry and warm but should be a good match for ribs or mole."

Vintages (April 2004) adds Cline Syrah to its Essentials Collection with the comment: " Deep ruby colour with aromas of  blackberry, caramel chocolate, ripe raspberry and hints of oak.  Dry with silky raspberry/caramel flavours.  Sweet centre is balanced by a layer of tannin.  Medium full-bodied with a medium long finish."  Stadt Krems Grüner Veltliner Cremisca  is billed as an Exceptional Value: ". . . fuller and rounder flavours than we have come to expect."

Vines (March/April 2004) has this to say about Casa Girelli Terriero Primativo Sangiovese: "This inexpensive Italian wine is a fine match for Wainwright's exotic world in song. An interesting blend of Primativo (the sibling of Californian Zinfandel) and Sangiovese, this features abundant aromas of dates, raisins and plums.  The medium-bodied red features cherry and plum fruit flavours and finishes dry on account of the wine's firm tannins.  A great value, let this easy going wine flow with Friday night pizza or Saturday snacking."  The same issue of Vines opines that Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum "deserves the name, the 'Cognac of rums'."

The April 2004 issue of Toronto Life made J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay a "Pick of the Month" with this comment: "This perennial LCBO favourite is less opulent than the 2001 but shows highly  scented toffee, lemon, peat-smoke aromas. Sleek palate with very fine acid balance and generous new oak spice and coffee. Tension, delicacy and power. Excellent length.  Rated 4 Stars."

Wine Spectator (January 31- February 29, 2004) rates Cline Oakley Vin Blanc 85: "Peach, apricot and floral flavors have ripe texture and good richness, with citrus rind and vanilla tones on the finish."

Wine & Spirits 2004 Buying Guide calls Cline Zinfandel "Exceptional Value": "Grainy and red with traces of black fruit, this wine's rusticity hints at its old-vine sources with a firm grip.  It would perk up a black-and-blue sirloin."

Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE (December 2003/January 2004) reviews Warsteinr Beer: "Bitter, zesty hops atop enzymatic yeast smalls make this malty and rich beer intriguing.  There are also hints of honey and herbs.  Pour respectfully into a chilled glass and drink one of these - only one - before dinner."

The Wine News (December 2003/January 2004) calls Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum "superb": "Medium copper color; deep set honeyed caramel nose, spicy notes with subtle citrus peel; dry entry, sweet vanilla cream, rancio note; long, dry finish."  J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon is acclaimed as a "Best Value Cab. of the Year": "Warm, inviting aromas of blackberry, black cherry, cassis, vanilla, cigar box and a touch of oak spice.  Rich and luscious on the palate with supple tannins, this well-stuffed wine delivers copious black fruit flavors supported by balanced acidity."

Winestate Special Edition 2003 calls Sandalford Premium Riesling "Subdued and elegant lime aromas.  Tight lime juice palate, some passionfruit and lingering acid."

Peter Rockwell, writing in HFX (December 24, 2003) says: "Bouvet Ladubay Brut: A bland of Chenin Blanc (95%) and Chardonnay (5%) from France's Loire Valley that offers Champagne's clean lines and developed depth of flavour without the eye-popping price tag.  Castellblanch Brut Zero: A medium-bodied Spanish Cava with a crisp, enveloping texture and exhilarating, green fruit flavours."

Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE (October/November 2003) reports that its tasting panel awarded the highest point at a recent sherry tasting to Tio Pepe Fino: One of the tasters "Bulleid loved its fresh intensity, green apple and flor nuances, fine, delicate palate and wonderful length while I [Peter Forrestal] commented on its slatey characters and dry, tangy finish."

Wine & Spirits (October 2003) rates Segura Viudas Crue de Lavit 81: "Pleasant, spicy oak on the nose and palate.  But there's a light peachy fruit under all that wood, peeking out.  Give it a year to resolve." 

Wine Access (October 2003) gives Southbrook Cassis 90 points with the comment: "Sweet nose of cassis and blackberry icing, burnt sugar and Christmas pudding.  Sweet blackberry and cassis fruti at the front end of the palate.  Acidity joins in at the mid-palate and contributes to the ling finish."

Vintages (October 2003)Says this if Château Guerry: "Medium ruby colour with aromas of current, elderberry, cherry and a note of humus.  Dry, good balance and a firm touch.  It will ideally benefit from short to mid-term aging (2-5 years)." 

Peter Rockwell, writing in HFX (August 21, 2003) says: "The most regal of wheat beers is arguably Konig Ludwig Weissbier. Weissbier translates to "white beer," and Konig's production originated with The Wittelsbachs, the former ruling house of Bavaria. With a cloudy, lemon-yellow colour, it's an easy drinker with a forward aroma of lemon meringue and banana, and a long tropical flavour of pineapple, white pepper and creamy butterscotch."

Peter Rockwell writing in HFX (July 3, 2003) picks Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon as one of his "Three Over $15":  "Big, brawny blackberry fruit saturates this wine and keeps coming back with punchy wood overtones and a creamy, cascading texture."  

Decanter (June 2003) highly recommends J. Lohr Riverstone Estate Chardonnay: "Elegant, soft apple fruit.  Lovely concentration and weight.  Very moreish.  Good syrupy fruit, long length."
Vines (June 2003) awards  Sandalford Shiraz 4 1/2 stars and says, "A vibrant, youthful Shiraz, from Western Australia' soldest and largest family owned winery. . . . offers a big oaky aroma loaded with dark raspberry, plump black currant and white pepper spice. Good tannins flow with a heavy wave of black and blue berry fruit and a lasting tingle of crushed black pepper. Try with buffaloand other full-bodied meats.  Will keep easily through 2008."

Peter Rockwell writing in HFX (May 8, 2003) has this to say about J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay:  "Aging 11 months in a combination of French and American oak gives Lohr's 2000 Chard a rich, toasty aroma layered with vanilla, coconut, sweet caramel and plenty of lemon-drop infusion.  Smoky oak saturates the mouth-filling flavour, where a flowing, buttery texture is accented by thick, citrusy fruit, a forward wave of alcohol and a lingering trail of creamy butterscotch."

Wine & Spirits (April 2003) rates Segura Viudas Creu de Lavit at 83: "Xarel-lo for wood lovers, the first and dominant note here is oak, but underneath it lies a waxy pear and light spice."

Wine & Spirits (February 2003) gives  Sandalford Shiraz  89: "Dark scents of bitter chocolate form the core of this black, tough wine. It's clean and firm, the blackness giving off a touch of horsiness, of smoke and astringency that needs time to reveal all its richness.  Solid and worthy of age."  Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon rates an 87 with the comment: "Purple-black as a mussel shell, this austere cabernet needs time for the light weight of its flavors to grow in impact.  The marine influence is there in a hard, almost saline tannin.  With a few years of age, the mintiness will serve well with lamb."

Malcolm Anderson (Montreal Gazette, March 1, 2003) gives Stadt Krems Cremisia Gruner Veltliner three stars with the comment: "[This wine] is from a vineyard that belongs to the town of Krems. The town has owned vineyards since 1452. This wine has aromas of quince and a touch of melon on the nose and palate. It is simple in style and of medium length on the palate."

Wine Investors Buying Guide (December 2002) rates Painter Bridge Zinfandel-Shiraz a "Best Buy" with the comment: "Medium ruby plum. Fresh berry and dill aromas. Medium body, crisp and lightly tannic. Flavors pick up where the nose leaves off with bright berry and dill; medium finish. This is a great quaffer any time, and it should go nicely with grilled meats and anything that plays well against a crisp, fruity red wine."

Huon Hook, writing in the Sydney Morning Herald (February 1, 2003) makes Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon, 2001, one of his "Pick of the Week."

The Sydney [Australia] Morning Herald (January 13, 2003) says this about Sandalford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: "This elegant Margaret River cab is loaded with mulberry, raspberry, mint and coffee/mocha flavours that are true to the region. It possesses elegance and varietal character. The overall impression is of fine balance, it finishes with measured tannins and fine style."

Max Crus, writing in the Clarence Valley Daily Examiner (January 11/12, 2003) chooses Sandalford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($27 Australian) as the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia (against competition that included Penfold Bin 707 at $100 Australian and Wolf Blass Black Label at $90). As he put it, "Typically good gear from Western Australian at an almost affordable price."

Vintages 2002 Gift Catalog says this of Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad: "Ever popular, this pewter-based bottle is memorable for its eye-catching design and the remarkable quality of the sparkling wine within. Aged from three to five years, this Cava offers citrus and pear flavours that are full and delicate, yet display power and length."

Vintages (December 7, 2002) suggests paella with Castellblanch Brut Zero and comments: "Pale straw colour with a fine mousse. Aromas suggest apple/mineral, lime and slight bisquity note. Dry, elegant, medium-bodied sparkler." 

Sandalford Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 is reviewed in Ray Jenkins book, Wine-Western Australia's Best: "Another very smart wine from winemaker Paul Boulden. There's some pretty serious tannin there, coupled with opulent cabernet that's been expertly worked with and French oaked; it's an impressive though slightly more elegant and leaner follow-up to the marvellous '99.  Best left in the cellar for a few years, but will be a beauty. 90/100" 

Wine Spectator (September 30, 2002) gives Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz 88 points: "On the crisp side, with a distinctive cinnamon and leather streak running through the lean red cherry flavors. The spicy notes echo on the finish. Best after 2003."

NSLC Licensee Line (November 2002) reviews Jim Barry Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon:  "Aroma: Herbaceous with hints of violets and blackberries. Flavour: A generous mix of dark berries, plums and a hint of chocolate all balanced beautifully by firm, natural tannins."  

Wine Tidings (November 2002) has reviews of the two Sandalford wines that will be at the Port of Wines Festival in Halifax in November: Sandalford 1999 Shiraz scores 96: "An aromatic beauty with a thick perfume of black and blue berry fruit balanced with cinnamon spice and sweet licorice. Bright forward flavours work the mouth with waves of mature, red berries, coating tannins and a forward prickle of acidity;" Sandalford 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon scored 94: "This is the quintessential Aussie Cab that opens with an aroma packed with jammy currant, mature strawberry, vanilla wood and caramel. A deep, delicious wine showing thick, inky blackberry fruit and classic wood-infused tannins." 

Vintages (November 2, 2002) reports on Albert Fisher Trockenbeerenauslese: "Deep golden colour with aromas of, dried apple, roasted nuts, mango and apricot. Sweet, fine botrytised wine that is rich and intense with a good balancing acid." Also reviewed (quoted from Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com) was Gonzalex Byass Pedro Ximenez Noe Muy Viejo Sherry: "Piercing and pungent, this super sweet Sherry is so thick you could almost cut it with a knife. It evolves on the palate from raison to caramel and coffee, with  a nutty aftertaste. Drink now. Score 90."

Vines (July-August 2002) says of Stadt Krems Cremisia Gruner Veltliner: Austria's workhorse grape has a characteristic white pepper-green pepper and citrus-green apple quality. This wine has a seediness on the nose as if the grapes were pressed too hard; it's dry and rather neutral in flavour with a bitterness on the finish. Drink now. Serve with oysters of grilled sardines."

Decanter (August 2002) recommends Château Paloumey: "Spicy, rich black cherries, with toasty oak. Ripe blackcurrant and cherry with great structure and balance." and Château Lestage: "Quite good claert-y fruit. Pleasant soft fruit, plummy and easy."

Wine Spectator (July 31, 2002) gives Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon a score of 88: "Ripe, supple and remarkably generous with its sweet currant, black cherry and deftly minty aromas and flavors, which echo beautifully on the round finish. Drink now through 2007."

Wine Tidings (July/August 2002) rates J. Lohr Painter Bridge Zinfandel/Shiraz at 86 points: "Deep purple. A swirling, aromatic mix of mature red fruit, cassis, raspberrry and dark chocolate. The palate is a thick, creamy combination of blackberry, juicy plum, ripe tannins and toasted oak with a lingering suggestion of cocoa." 

Sean Wood in the Halifax Herald (August 3, 2002) had this to say about Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz: "Youthful purple in the glass, this one has a long life ahead. The bouquet has yet to really open up but already reveals subtle, elusive spice with mineral and eucalyptus notes. This is a huge wine, thickly textured, with tons of tannin and primary acidity at this point, but underlying layers of ripe berry fruit. The lingering finish shows the Barry touch with deftly handled oak. This panoply of complex tastes and textures needs another five years to really start to show its stuff."  Jim Barry Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: "Although a year younger, this cab is much more open than its big brother, with spicy notes of cinnamon, mace, some eucalyptus and developed fruit on the nose. Rich fruit, toffee and dark chocolate are all apparent, although acids and tannins could use a bit more softening. A very fine, well integrated wine, though perhaps a tad short on the finish."  Achaia Clauss Nemea: "With the entry of Greece into the European Community in 1981, that country's wine industry embarked on a much needed modernization program. A new system of appellations has been introduced together with investment in equipment and expertise. Nemea is an appellation in the Eastern Peloponnese for red wine made from the Agiorgitko grape. This wine has a soft, spicy and slightly nutty bouquet. Pleasantly rounded in the mouth with soft acidity, it is lightly spiced showing mature fruit and finishing with a hint of oak. It will match with grilled or roasted meat dishes."

NSLC Licensee Line (June 2002) has this to say about  Stadt Krems Cremisia Gruner Veltliner: "Colour is bright greenis-hgold. Nose is gently fruited with a spicy elegance. The wine has a delightfully fresh, crisp taste with a slightly citrus character and a refreshing finish."

Vintages (June 2002) quotes Doug Lawrason's review of Stadt Krems Cremiscia Gruner Veltliner: "This is a decent minerally yet racy example of Austria's famous white grape.The youthful nose is quite subdued, maybe in time more will show. It is a crisp apple grapefruit midweight white with good balance and finishes long with apple-pie honeyed flavours. An improvem,ent over the 1999 vintage, this may well evolve over the next few years, and would be fine with shellfish now."

Vines (May-June 2002) gives J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon 3 1/2 stars: "An attractive wine from one of Paso Robles best producers. Deep red in colour with thick legs that moved slowly down the glass. The heady bouquet displayed tonnes of blackberry and cigar, ending with thick spearmint. On first sip the wine had a gentle warmth from the tannins that spread like a blanket through the mouth. As we progressed clove, spice and jammy currant fruit came through. This is a great find, full of balanced fruit and tannin."  Their suggestion as a wine to pair with Vichyssoise, "Sherry would be your best bet in my opinion. Try a good (and chilled Fino (Tio Pepe is perfect)

Wine Tidings (April 2002) gives Painter Bridge Zinfandel-Shiraz 85 points: "Deep purple-red. Successfully pairs the brambly, berries-and-spice character of a medium-weight Zinfandel with the peppery bite of Shiraz. Bright, lively and notably soft-textured."

Decanter (April 2002) says of J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon "Ripe cassis nose. Quite sweet fruit with some ripeness and acidity. Attractive and straightforward."

Wine Spectator (May15, 2002) gives Caves Velhas Palmela Romeira 83 points: "Traditional style, with a slightly stewy aroma and focused flavors of dried cherry, leather and spice, which linger on the finish. Drink now."

(The Mail Star, Halifax, May 11, 2002) reports on two new Austrian wines.  Stadt Krems "Cremascia" Gruner Veltliner: "Gruner Veltliner is Austria's most important and distinctive white grape. This one is sensuously perfumed with plenty of body and elegantly white fruit. The flavours are unusual and make a pleasant change from the usual run of Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs. It will pair well with full flavoured seafood and chicken dishes."  Norbert Bauer "Von Haugsdorf" Ernte Zweigelt: ". . . It is Austria's most widely planted red grape variety. Usually, Zweigelt is very herbaceous, making pleasant, light-bodied wine. This version is quite different. The bouquet is fresh, with a cool-climate fruity scent. In the mouth, though, it is rounded, full-bodied and quite spicy. For a $13 wine it shows quite a bit of finesse."

Vintages (March 9, 2002) says of Cline Ancient Vines Mourvedre: "Enticing flavors of roasted herbs, mint, black currants and plum are loaded with intensity in this Rhone-style red from California, while chocolate notes and firm tannins carry through the finish. Drink now through 2005.  Score: 90"  James Laube in Wine Spectator (January 31 - February 28, 2002) rates this wine 88 and a 'Smart Buy in California Rhone-Style Wines': "Rich and concentrated , with mint and roasted herbs and a blueberry and lavender core. Firm tannins. Wonderful structure."  

Wine Spectator (January 31 - February 28, 2002) awards Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel an 87 and comments: "A bit gamy, with dried black cherry, kirsch, herbs, cocoa and toasty oak wrapped within firm tannins. Drink now through 2005."  This wine will be at the California Wine Fair in Halifax at Pier 21, April 19, 2002.  Corvo Bianco scores 85: "One of the best Corvo whites in years, this wine exhibits dried pineapple and hints of apricots on both nose and palate. It's medium-bodied, with good fruit and a clean finish. A really nice bottle for the price.  Drink now."

Wine Spectator (December 31, 2001 - January 15, 2002) rates Cline Oakley Vin Rouge 84: "Curious, with pronounced spice and a lively mouthfeel. Modestly tannic flavors of black cherry, sweet kirsch and fresh herbs. Mourvedre blend. Drink now through 2004."   Tio Pepe Fino Sherry earned an 86: "Powerfully aromatic, this fino shows typical notes of almonds, straw and herbs. On the palate, it's firm and balanced, but a bit less expressive. Fresh and clean."

Irvin Wolkoff in Medical Post ( January 22, 2002) said, "The Tio Pepe (score 88) was, as usual, fresh, creamy and lemony, delicious chilled and consumed as you would any assertive white wine.

The Sunday Telegraph (UK) Christmas Food & Drink 2001 Issue called Tio Pepe a "Best Sherry": "This classic fino has a punchy aroma and a bone-dry character that makes it a fine aperitif and an excellent food wine."

Vines (Winter 2002) rates Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon  four stars: "A fabulous glass of wine. The nose offers spearmint, fennel seed and a huge whack of cassis. The palate is loaded Eucalyptus, black fruit and plum. The tannins are chewy and reminiscent of milky chocolate. Stick this away for a year or two and you will be a happy drinker when you open it."

Wine (August 2001) comments on Tio Pepe Dry Fino Sherry: "Ideal summer drink. Chilled fino with nice yeasty character. Nuttiness on palate and dry refreshing acidity on finish." "A lovely salty and nutty nose, with a great balance of cream, salt and nutty fruit in the mouth and a long almond finish."

Wine & Spirits (August 2001) rates Achaia Clauss Imperial Mavrodaphne de Patras at 88: "This thick, purple mavrodaphne reserve has gone the way of a tawny Port, age simultaneously lightening and deepening its flavors. Now the fruit is more baked apple and apricot, w3hile the freshness has turned to truffle, spice, and deep caramel. Most remarkably, the sweetness has mellowed considerably, giving plenty of ripe flavors while finishing light and clean. Pour it with sweet rusks at the end of the meal."

Decanter (December 2001) reviews J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay: "Ripe fruit, apricot and peach aromas with toastiness. Very rich on the palate, round and intense, balanced acidity with a long length."

Barbara Ritchie (Enoteca Wine & Food, Fall 2001) has this to say about Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon: ". . . from the Clare Valley in South Australia spent 13 months in American oak barriques evenly split between one and two-year old barrels, and then blended.  It has a distinctive note of eucalyptus in the nose, with upfront oak and vanilla notes, underpinned by peat and chocolate.  Rich and chunky, it carries dark plum, black current and spice in the full-bodied taste.  A wonderful wine for putting in your cellar, it is good now with confit of canard with a spicy red wine sauce laced with garlic or barbecued swordfish with grilled vegetable skewers."

Vintages (November 3, 2001)says of Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Brut Cava: "Available at Vintages every Holiday season since 1997, Segura Heredad's non-vintage Reserva sparkling wine has become a tradition here.  The product is memorable not just for its packaging - its distinctive pewter base has always been a conversation piece - but also for the excellence of its bubbles.  In 1999, Tony Aspler gave this wine four stars (out of five)."

Wine Enthusiast (November 2001) rates Vedrenne Supercassis Crême de Cassis a 'Best Buy': "Jet black, opaque.  Flows out of the bottle like lava.  A vinous, leafy, vegetal bouquet frontally attacks the olfactory sense; further passes reveal black pepper.  The palate entry is tart but has remarkably vivid fruit; the mid-palate shows more sweetness in the form of ripe black current fruit. The after-taste is long, creamy and luscious.  One of the best crême de cassis selections you can find."

Vintages (September 8, 2001) calls Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon 'Exceptional Value': "This wine received 13 months aging in American oak barriques - evenly split between new: one year old and two tear old barriques.  Our panel's tasting note: Combines plum, cassis, oak and spice; touch of mint and flowers. Quite full to ripe, balanced tannins.)

Toronto Life Wine, Beer, and Spirits Guide (2001) gives Moselland Bernkastler Kurfurstlay Riesling 3 1/2 stars: "Light overall, just nine percent alcohol, crisp citrus to balance its fruity sweetness.  Cheap and tasty."  Corvo Rosso earns four stars: "Mainly nero d'avola grapes aged one year in Slovenian oak at this modern winery.  Ruby red with a tarry, spiced, vinous bouquet. Charming fruity-woodsy warmth.  Smooth, sun-ripe, with balance and harmony." 

Wine & Spirits (October 2001) rates Caves Velhas Romeira 87 with the comment: "Currents run through the smoky black char of this wine, a complex interaction of tobacco smoke and black current flavor.  It's a bit warm, ready for a roast goat or a roast suckling pig."  Gonzalez Byass Tio Pepe Dry Sherry scores 80: "This popular fino presents itself with a creamy texture and light, nutty flavors.  The high alcohol demands that it's served well chilled." Cline Cotes d'Oakley (soon to be called simply Cline Oakley) is heralded as "Good Value": "The clean bright raspberry fruit flavors of this easy Rhone style blend will be a fine complement to your next chicken barbecue."

Wine Tidings (November 2001) gives Moselland Bernkastler Kurfurstlay Riesling 81: "Subtle nose with a somewhat medicinal overtone. Honey and green starfruit, lively acids, slight spritz and a short, pleasant, off-dry finish."

Wine Skinny says of Segura Viudas  Reserva Heredad : "Intense with good fruit, lots of toasted nut and yeast flavors, and a clean, crisp finish. Almost a "New World" style. Ready to drink now."

Wine Enthusiast (August 2001) calls Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum one of the "Power Rums" or world class spirits: "Subtle scents of prunes and vanilla delight the olfactory sense. Excellent balance in the mouth. Mildly sweet and smoky tastes. Perfect on-the-rocks, oak-aged rum."

Wine Spectator (June 15, 2001) calls Cline Zinfandel a "Best Value in California Zinfandel", rates it 86 and says, "Lively in the mouth, with flavors of raisins, dried currants, and roasted herbs, highlighted by modest tannins."

Wine Tidings (May/June 2001) rates Achaia Clauss Imperial Mavrodaphne de Patras at 89: "Bright nose of cooked strawberries and fig newton cookies, well balanced with a long clean full fruity finish."

Sean Wood (Halifax Mail-Star, May 26, 2001) writes about Neirano Barbera d’Asti: "I had ignored this producer’s Barbara . . . This one is well worth a try though, with enticing scents of black cherry and plum with big, mouth-filling dollops of generous fruit. It finishes with a satisfying melange of ripe plum, bitter cherry and oak. A great food wine. Just the thing for the outdoor grilling season."

NSLC Licensee Line (February 2001) writes of Burdon Amontillado Sherry, "A light sherry with a rich, almost sweet bouquet and softness with depth to the taste.   With maturity comes hints of nuts and raisins with a greater flavour concentration.   The aftertaste is clean and dry."

Wine Access (December 2000) gives Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum 92 points: "Once based in Cuba, this company now distills in Florida. If your only brush with rum is while tanning in Barbados, give this a try. Great stuff. Pale bright gold in colour with heady tropical, very pure bouquet of banana, lime, coconut and sugar cane. Surprisingly delicate spirit, with finesse, warmth and sweetness. Sip like cognac." 

Peter Rockwell (The Sunday Daily News, December 17, 2000) reports on Fougeres Beaujolais: "The wines of Beaujolais are famous for their soft, manageable personalities - easy to drink and oh-so food friendly. This one from Adolphe Fougeres is made from a blend of juice produced in vineyards throughout the region that creates a supple wine with bushels of strawberry and raspberry fruit and a tame tannic backbone.  A red for those that say they hate reds."

Wine Access (November 2000) rates Gonzales Byass Tio Pepe Fino Sherry 86 with the comment, "Flagship sherry in 110 countries, the nose shows sharp pine needles and cypress aromas and peachpit, slightly almond flavours with distinct alcoholic heat on the finish."

In Wine Spectator (December 15, 2000)  Gonzales Byass Tio Pepe Dry Fino Sherry  earns 88 points with the comment: "Bracing and ultradry, here's a fino that begs for tapas. Nut and apple flavors are accented by iodine, and the finish leaves a mouthwatering impression." 

LCBO Vintages (November 4, 2000) reports on Matusalem Gran Reserva Cuban Tradition Rum, which, incidentally sells for $39.80 in Ontario but $33.25 in Nova Scotia. "Founded in 1872 in Santiago de Cuba by the Alvarez family, Matusalem (with Bacardi) dominated the rum scene by the 1950s.   In 1956, the family's luck chamged when both father and son died within six months of each other.  Then, in 1959, the company was confiscated by the government and the Alvarez family was forced to leave Cuba.  Over the years, the family became embroiled in in prolonged litigation with a variety of factions, all claiming ownership to the Matusalem name.  Today, the company is once again run by the Alvarez family, with the founder's grandson at the helm.  Blended in Florida and aged over an extended period in an extensive solera system (it is a blend of rums that are nine to 32 years old -- average age is 15), the 'Gran Reserva' is intended as a sipping rum, and joins a growing line of rums that should be enjoyed, unadulterated, from a snifter."  Vintages also quotes a review of Michael Botner (Ottawa Citizen Magazine, December/January 1999/2000): "It's a smooth, rich, golden liquid with sweet, peppery sugar cane, vanilla, and zest citrus flavours."

Peter Rockwell (Halifax Daily News, October 1, 2000) comments on Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay: "The Riverstone is barrel fermented in a combination of American and French oak before being aged 12 months in similar circumstances.  Its aroma is heavily wooded with deep fruit-infusion that oozes hints of coconut and sweet butterscotch.The round, mouth-filling flavour gives you a forest of oak in every glass, along with an appealing smoky character that's accented by a thich citrus, toasted timber, buttery caramel and a nice punch of alcohol."  

Quarterly Review of Wines
(Summer 2000) calls J.Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon ‘very good’ with the comment, "Lightish ruby color; delicate cassis nose; lush, ripe, cassis, chocolate and vanilla flavors; soft, easy-going finish."

Wine Enthusiast (August 2000) rates  Cline Côtes d’Oakley Rouge  85: "Great little wine – or not so little, to judge by its hefty tannins. Has lots of ripe, sweet fruit, jam, and pepper. A little rustic, but satisfying, great BBQ wine. Blend of Mourvèdre, Carignane, Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, and probably others; an old style field blend."
